May 2002 SAM Centennial Celebration Banquet The Society of American Magicians celebrated the centennial anniversary of its founding this past week. Assemblies all over the country have held parties, shows and banquets in commemoration of the anniversary. Last night, Saturday, May 11, 2002, the Atlanta Society of Magicians gathered for a lovely banquet to celebrate the 100th birthday of the SAM. In addition to the old photos and scrapbooks on hand, the wand of the founder of the Atlanta Society of Magicians was on display. The Atlanta Society of Magicians was founded in 1924 by Julian V. Boehm and later affiliated with the SAM. Following a fabulous dinner, our guest speaker John Doyle presented an entertaining and concise history of the founding of the SAM. Mr. Doyle, a well known television personality in the Atlanta market, was extremely active in the Atlanta magic community in the 1960s and is a past president of IBM Ring 9. His talk was punctuated with a number of visual surprises. Thirty-six people celebrated at the banquet, and among the many distinguished attendees was Carol Garrett. Carol is the wife of SAM Past National President Dan Garrett, a member of Assembly 30 who was out of town performing at another assembly's banquet. Carol is a fine magician in her own right and was elected to membership in the assembly independently. Other notable guests included Ken Fletcher (founder of Magic Masters), and J.C. and Mary Doty. Mr. Doty is a well known magician and was the builder of Tom Mullica's Tomfoolery magic bar. After the speech, attendees of the centennial celebration enjoyed a fast -paced magic program featuring Dale Adamson (MC, 6-bill repeat), Jim Magus (mindreading), Bill Packard (rope routine a la Daryl), K.C. Roberts (newspaper prediction), Joe M. Turner (Elmsley's "Between Your Palms"), Donnie Golson (torn card routine), Fred Ulrich (card and coin routine), Bob Stultz (mismade flag), John Miller (Goldstein's "Jumbo B'Wave") and Ken Scott (mental epic, fantasy magician).
