June 2002 Meeting Notes

Good reports were given by all who attended the Founder’s Day Centennial Dinner held May 11 at the Colonnade Restaurant. John Doyle, local television weather personality, gave an educational view of the Society of American Magicians in Atlanta. The food and the magic were outstanding that evening. We had several visitors to the meeting. They were Mark Shelton, Ron O’Donald, and Masha and Thomas Young, who came all the way from Dalton, GA. We were reminded to keep the Southeastern Association of Magicians (SEAM) in mind, since it is coming up August 8, 9, and 10. It will be held at the Crowne Plaza Airport.

Carol Garrett was elected as delegate for Assembly 30 at the Centennial S.A.M. Convention in New York City in July.

Enough business, on to the magic! Joe Turner began the evening with a fine presentation of an ace assembly (Hitchcock Aces). Joe also reviewed the new video by Robert Neale called “Celebration of Sides” and proclaimed it to be a most entertaining view. Dan Garrett followed with Quentin Reynolds’ presentation of an impromptu business card trap door. He pushed a spectator’s entire body though a small trap door in a borrowed business card, which totally amazed Thomas Young, his willing spectator. Dan then had a playing card chosen, which was revealed by the guarantee on the Joker. Dan had a signed card torn into four pieces with the spectator holding one piece and the rest in a coin purse. When the purse was opened, there were no pieces inside. Instead, the card appeared restored in the deck--minus the piece in the spectator’s hand. (Karrell Fox’s Rip-Off). Unbelievably, Fred Ulrich got up and followed Dan with the exact same trick. It was the one he had planned to do for the evening. Dan was not aware of this and had not even performed the trick in several years. I think something spooky was going on!

One of our visitors, Ron O’Donald, performed a trick allowing the spectator to do the work. The spectator dealt down cards and stopped at will. The spectator then counted the number of cards in the packet, selected a card, and dealt down as many cards as in the packet. The spectator held the new packet in hand and did the Australian shuffle (one card down, one card under) and found the selected card.

Gene Hendrix, our new President, did a Triple Coincidence and card discovery, changing an indifferent card to the selected card. Joe Turner then demonstrated with Mary Doty how to shuffle, cut and form four stacks. Amazingly, Joe got four kings on his stacks, and Mary got four aces. The evening ended in a free-for-all magical extravaganza, with magic breaking out everywhere.
