September 2002 Meeting Notes We had no August meeting due to the SEAM convention. This month we met at Piccadilly Cafeteria across from our usual meeting place which, to our surprise, now closes at 3:00 PM. We had 6 members and 5 guests. Our guests included Bob Comeans, Matt McElhannon, Mary Doty, Debi Stultz, and Mark Lewis of Toronto. President Gene Hendrix conducted a short business meeting. The highlights were that we are solvent, and that our Assembly was awarded the Howard Thurston Award for 2002 membership growth. Membership drives do pay off. Our Assembly Vice President, Joe M. Turner, organized the evening's entertainment. Gene Hendrix presented an excellent performance of Larry Jennings "The Homing Card" using the special card from the July 2002 issue of MAGIC magazine. Gene got his money's worth with that subscription. Joe M. Turner performed a John Bannon version of the Marlo/Gardner poker deal which included some very entertaining twists and turns. Naturally he ended up with a royal flush at the end. Mark Lewis was working a trade show in Atlanta and joined us for dinner and to share some magic. We are glad he did. Mark had a fabulous tongue-in-cheek card mentalism routine. Not only did we enjoy his magic, but others in the restaurant did as well. Coins through table, ambitious card, and more mind reading with cards were enjoyed by all. Rick Hinze, who filled in as our secretary in Carol Garrett's absence due to illness, performed twisting the aces with a patter theme based on the weight of the ink on each card. Should we continue to meet at the Piccadilly Cafeteria we will be faced with two challenges. We must be out of there by 9:00 PM, and all the magic we do will be visible to other diners. The first issue is inconvenient, but the latter may actually be a positive thing. We'll discuss further at the next meeting. Rick Hinze, Acting Secretary, and Joe M. Turner, Assembly 30 V.P. |
