November 2002 Assembly Report (sent to M-U-M)

President: Gene Hendrix, geneh@attbi.com
Secretary: Carol Garrett, CarolMsWiz@aol.com
Web site: http://sam30atlanta.tripod.com
Meets: 2nd Thursday at Steak and Ale, 2150 Northlake Parkway, Tucker, GA 30084

Joe M. Turner served as our MC/VP. Joe Morrison began the fun with the mindreading of the oldest mind present, Seymour Kessler. Joe asked Seymour to cut a small packet of cards from the deck and lay them aside. From the rest of the deck Seymour dealt cards onto the packet and looked at the top card when he stopped. The packet was shuffled and all the cards called out one at a time. Seymour wrote down the chosen card and Joe wrote down his prediction. Guess what--it matched!!

Joe Turner did a card trick he learned in church. Fred Ulrich was his helper. Fred cut the deck and took the bottom card. God and Satan had a fight over Fred, whose card represented his soul. There was a game of cards with 13 cards in 2 hands. God had seven cards and Satan had six. Satan said if the top card matched the suit of Fred's card, Fred's soul was his. God said that the value of the card would win Fred's soul back. Fred was feeling a little rough about this, since the suit matched. Fortunately for Fred, so did the value.

Gene Hendrix had a card chosen and the deck was placed into four piles, then shuffled back to front, making quite a mess. When the deck was spread, only the hearts were facing up, except for the 9, the chosen card.

Dan Garrett closed out the evening with a couple of effects. He had a method of marking cards in a small packet. He showed the blue-backed Ace through 4 of spades which reversed themselves one at a time except for the 4. When the cards were turned over the backs of the cards had their faces on the backs--in red! This is a Bob Jardine effect. The next effect Dan did with JC Doty where he stopped on a chosen card and Dan looked for the soulmate of the card. He asked Doty to create a small magic word to help him locate the card. The word was "its." The magic word was pronounced over the deck and behold-the soulmate was found. But wait! In the magic wallet, cards were found that spelled out the magic word "its." "It's" amazing!

Our Assembly was pleased to receive the Howard Thurston Membership Award for this year. We also salute Richard Hinze on his 35 years of membership in the SAM. We hope you will visit with us when you are in Atlanta.

Assembly Minutes for November 14, 2002

VP Joe M. Turner called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. We decided to meet at the Lavista Steak and Ale for the foreseeable future. There was no old business brought forth. It was suggested that for National Magic Week for next October that a group from the Assembly make an appointment to go to the Capitol in April or May and have a proclamation from the Mayor or Governor.

Public performances noted were Joe Turner who is demonstrating a magic kit for Discovery Channel Store at Northpoint Mall on Saturday. This kit was assembled by Marc Settaducatti. Bret Martin, Road Warrior from Channel 5, will be at the Harvest of Magic on Friday morning to interview several magicians, Dan Garrett among them, for television concerning the Harry Potter movie release.

Our Assembly has been chosen to be one of the sites for the Michael Ammar Centennial Lecture sponsored by the Magic Endowment Fund. The stipulations are that visitors will be allowed for a preview of half an hour, but then must join the Assembly or leave. The cost to the Assembly would be $75. If non members are allowed to stay, the club would be charged the full $350 lecture fee. The suggestion for date, March 9, is the weekend of Gatlinburg. It was suggested that we request March 13. Carol Garrett will contact Scott Wells on this.

Congratulations were given to the Assembly on the Howard Thurston Membership Growth award. The plaque was presented to members present. Congratulations also are extended to Rick Hinze on 35 years of membership. He will receive a certificate and pin.

Joe Turner will list member's names and email addresses on the website unless anyone has an objection. Magician of the Year nominees for the Assembly are Joe Turner and Gene Hendrix. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
