December 2002 Assembly Report (sent to M-U-M)

President: Gene Hendrix, geneh@attbi.com
Secretary: Carol Garrett, CarolMsWiz@aol.com
Web site: http://sam30atlanta.tripod.com
Meets: 2nd Thursday at Steak and Ale, 2150 Northlake Parkway, Tucker, GA 30084

We had a festive evening at our meeting tonight. Our host at the Steak and Ale, Emile, brought us a special yule log dessert. He said that was his magical contribution to the evening--and it was delicious!

The magic festivites began with Rick Hinze assisted by Gene Hendrix. Rick baffled Gene with a silver/copper transposition. I don't think Gene has it figured out yet. Gene Hendrix then presented his own experiment in imagination with four queens, turning two face up and having the spectator guess which color they were. The chosen queens appeared in the spectators hand face up, but from a different pack. In fact, the other cards had no faces at all!

Joe Morrison had a fancy bag with four gold balls and one black one. He handed the balls out to five people and devined the location of the black ball by sheer magic. This effect was one presented by Charles Gauci at his recent lecture.

Gene Hendrix took a napkin and made a well in his hand, producing a multicolored streamer. What a clever way to ditch the tip, Gene.

Our visitor from Tampa, Ken Sponola, gave us an eye test with a pair of dice. The numbers on the dice changed each time he moved his hand. I began to see spots before my eyes. Seymour Kessler says it was a pretty dicey trick. Ken said Melvin Burkhart taught this trick to the members in Tampa.

Rick Hinze kept changing one coin to another with a little rub of the fingers. Gene once again followed him with a stage illusion reduced to table magic. Gene said he would take an assistant and change them inot a tiger. Rick chose the Queen of Spades as the assistant with his name signed on the back. The queen was placed in the deck and came out as the tiger, complete with signature.

Joe Morrison did a counting trick with cards in four piles, adding and subtracting several times until all of the top cards on the piles were fours. Quite a fours trick, if you ask me. Gene followed that with a sweet little trick involving a cocoa bean, a dime and a pack of sugar in his hand. When he applied heat, he ended up with two Hershey's kisses. A lovely ending to an entertaining evening.

Our joint meeting with the IBM Ring for our Holiday Banquet will be on January 4 at the Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church. We will also have a club meeting on January 9.

Gene Hendrix called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Minutes were accepted as read.

New business: The Holiday Banquet will be at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church on January 4. Our club is in charge of organizing the dinner. We need to be there by 4:00 p.m. to set up and need a clean up crew. Joe has plastic tablecloths and the top hat decorations.
