January 2003 Assembly Report (sent to M-U-M) President: Gene Hendrix, geneh@attbi.com The evening began with recognition of our visitor, Rolando Santos, who was voted joint SAM/IBM Magician of the Year at our annual Holiday banquet held January 4. We also had visitors Keith Rainey and Jim Mangham who came for magical fun. Keith began the entertaiment with a premonition effect. Keith had a random person selected for the selection of a card. The deck was dealt out card by card until the chosen card was found. Guess what? The chosen card was not found in the deck, but in Keith’s pocket. He had a premoniton that the particular card would be chosen and had removed it before the trick! Dan Garrett told an old joke about a friend in criminology who used photochromatography, which used chemicals that changed colors in certain light. It was an old joke, but led into his joker routine for the bicycle built for five, a Ton Onosaka production. Rick Hinze revealed an effect that would help with the transfer of hostilities. He had a card selected and unwrapped a vodoo kit with various apparatus that he rolled across the card to transfer anger to a sympathetic card. He tore an index from the selected card using a button from the voodoo kit. The sympathetic card was found with a ripped index as well. Just to make sure the anger transfer was complete, he used fire to singe the back of the signed card. You guessed it, the sympathetic card came out of the pack singed as well. Ooh, scary, kids! Rolando Santos proclaimed that every deck of cards is different and he could pick out a card by touch. He found a chosen card and then found the matching card from the pack. Gene Hendrix had a card selected and initialed, then moved the initials to his own personal card. Gee, what a neat trick. Andy Pascual, who was home from college in Birmingham, had a card selected and signed. He then proceeded to fold and tear the card into pieces. With his magical hands he welded the signed card back to its original pristine condition. Jim Mangham, one of our visitors, had a card chosen by having the spectator count down a certain number and remember the card at that position. Jim then found the card at the chosen number in the packet without the aid of a hint from the audience. Amazing! Gene Hendrix told us that some cards masquerade as others. He had cards placed in piles of three cards each with jokers to complete the piles. Of course, the jokers sometimes masquerade as other cards and jump from pile to pile. When the pile that was to be all jokers was revealed, it turned out that it was the four aces. Great masquerade! Dan Garrett finished the evening with his four card trick. It’s true, he can never fool his wife. Carol Garrett, Assembly Secretary Assembly Minutes for January 9, 2003 Gene Hendrix called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Minutes were accepted as read.
