April 2003 Assembly Report (sent to M-U-M)

President: Gene Hendrix, geneh@attbi.com
Secretary: Carol Garrett, CarolMsWiz@aol.com
Web site: http://sam30atlanta.tripod.com
Meets: 2nd Thursday at Steak and Ale, 2150 Northlake Parkway, Tucker, GA 30084

Keith Rainey, our newly elected Assembly member, showed us a solar card trick. He performed a messy shuffle, cards in all directions. Then, with the eclipse of the sun, the cards righted themselves, not only in the same direction, but all the way back into suits! Quite the sunny trick!

Robert Bengel had the assistance of Tony Mulchandani for the next effect. Tony selected a card which was one of four cards Robert extracted from the deck. The four cards were waved over the deck and one of them disappeared--the chosen one, of course. Lo and behold, the card appeared in the loaf of bread left from dinner. However, we think the card was cooked too long, because the back turned blue when the deck was red. Just think, if he had a little more yeast in that bread he could have done a rising card effect! Bob then did a follow the leader card trick with a sloppy shuffle with all of the cards righting themselves except for the chosen card. Then Bob removed the aces where they disappeared in the invisible palm. Bob then had a card chosen and narrowed it down to three possibilities. The cards in the hand become all backs and the chosen card disappears, only to return in Bob’s pocket.

Dan Garrett had laryngitis tonight, so Bob Bengel ably narrated his portion of the evening. A deck was borrowed, then Joe Turner picked a card and placed it back into the deck. Four cards were removed from the deck. Dan then waved his hand over and under the cards. When the cards were counted from his hand, there were only three. The chosen card was in the bread--hey, wait a minute, didn’t we just see that trick?

Joe Turner showed us a work-in-progress, a Dai Vernon routine called Silk and Silver. The effect used three coins and a silk handkerchief. It is coming along nicely, with Joe preparing it as part of a competition act.

Assembly Minutes for April 10, 2003

Gene Hendrix called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. There were no minutes from last month, since we only had the Ammar lecture. No visitors were in attendance.

A new member pin and membership card was presented to Tony Mulchandani. The treasurers report was $1408.91. Bob Stultz was able to get a refund from the bank for $33 on the charges they were making to the account. There was a payment of $75 to Michael Ammar for lecture fee, leaving $1366.91 in the bank.

New business: Jay Gorham, incoming President of SAM, wrote to us asking if we would be willing to host the Spring 2004 National Council Meeting in Atlanta. This consists of holding a show for them on a Friday or Saturday night while they are here. It was passed as a motion that we host the National Council with a show during the Spring 2004 National Council Meeting. Gene Hendrix will contact Jay Gorham and get further information.

The annual meeting for election of new officers will be next month. Bob Stultz also reminds us that local Assembly dues of $6 are due that evening, May 8.

Keith Rainey was unanimously elected as an Assembly 30 member. Several members paid dues tonight.

Announcement: Joe Turner will be performing at the Off Shoot Theater for their Stars of the Southern Crescent variety show on May 9. He will be sending emails to all later this month.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m.

Carol Garrett, Assembly Secretary
