May 2003 Assembly Report (sent to M-U-M) President: Gene Hendrix, geneh@attbi.com Rick Hinze began the evening’s festivities with a prediction card. Mary Doty, his able assistant, chose a card from the deck. The card matched the prediction card, which was great, since Rick used a trick deck--all other cards were Jack of Clubs. Not to be accused of cheating, Rick pulled out a "real deck" (well it said so on the box) and had a card chosen. This deck had all red backs except the chosen card, which had a blue back. The deck was then cut in half and replaced. Rick placed the cards in the box and put a magic wand through the box. Behold, the chosen card rose out of the box! Gene Hendrix continued with a rope trick. Keith Rainey assisted by cutting the rope in half, well almost. Since it was not quite even, Gene started over again with a complete rope (wait a minute, wasn’t that just two ropes a minute ago?). Gene then tied the ends together and cut the rope, which became a sliding knot. When the sliding knot was untied, there were two pieces of rope. Keith took a piece and he and Gene did a duet sliding knot. Quite a knotty trick, if you ask me. Dan Garrett borowed a deck and performed an observation test with Mary Doty. She named a card, Dan cut the deck and made all the faces disappear except the chosen card. This effect comes from Meir Yedid. Dan’s next effect involved a beauty contest. He did an experiment to predict the winner of Miss Bikini 2003. Dan made a prediction in an envelope of the name of the winner. The contestants were a deck of cards with ladies in bikinis. Each lady had a name. A judge was chosen (Doty?) to shuffle the deck and pick 16 quarter-finalists, and then fairly eliminate them down to just one winner. The lucky lady was Heather, the predicted one. Thanks to Boris Wild for this effect. Now we can be sure that some beauty contests are rigged! Eric Anderson, one of our visitors, did a beautiful routine with queens and aces. The queens and aces changed places from table to box, changed places one at a time, then lined them up like stairs and the cards jumped and became threes. Eric then had a chosen card fly from one packet to another. It was quite a display. Bob Stultz passed out "my card" to three people and made a prediction. Cards were selected from the deck and returned. Bob then heated the "my cards" to reveal the chosen cards. It was a hot trick, especially when the cards caught fire! Keith Rainey had a card selected, then snapped his fingers, causing the card to turn face up then revealing a different back. With another snap the card changed into a second selected card. Keith then did a routine with four aces with red backs and four with blue backs. He mixed the back colors and when they were touched, they separated again to red and blue. Jim Mangham was assisted by Carol Garrett in a card experiment in ESP. Carol separated the cards into four piles face down into red or black cards by intuition. It was out of this world, or pretty close to it. Carol Garrett, Assembly Secretary Assembly Minutes for May 8, 2003 Gene Hendrix called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Visitors were Eric Anderson and Jeanie Mangham. Treasurer’s report shows money in the bank. We now have free checking. Old business: Gene Hendrix responded to Jay Gorham’s request that we host the midyear meeting next spring. Details will be coming. We need to be looking for a place to host a show. New business: A delegate needs to be elected to represent us at the SAM Convention in Las Vegas. Rick Hinze was elected to serve. An email was received from Petrick and Mia soliciting a lecture offer. We voted to pass this on to other sources. Jim Mangham was nominated for Assembly membership. Officers were elected by unanimous vote for next year. They are President Gene Hendrix, Vice President Keith Rainey, Secretary Carol Garrett, Treasurer Bob Stultz, and Sargent at Arms Rick Hinze. The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 p.m. Carol Garrett, Assembly Secretary |
